2x 10-week courses: Russian Opera from Glinka to Stravinsky.
Exotic fairytale; moral fable; intense psychodrama: Russian opera has it all. Opera for Russian composers was both a rapprochement with European tradition and an assertion of cultural difference. We examine the work of Glinka, Musorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, with some mention of Prokofiev and Shostakovitch.
